FA5005 Faroe Islands, Scott #1 on January 18, 1919 cover
Denmark # 97 provisional overprint 2o + 5o on local cover 1919.
Faroe Islands AFA # 1 provisional stamp correctly paying the 7ore rate on this local cover and postmarked Torshavn 18 January 1919 (in the correct Jan 12-23 usage period), even though the stamp remained valid for usage until January 31,1919.
A Torshavn carpenter named Peter Paulson made one wooden hand stamp (now in the Danish Postal Museum) to hold the necessary metal type. Known quantities of 155 sheets were hand-stamped quite neatly in the Torshavn post office beginning 13th January, producing 15,500 overprints. Only one inverted overprint is known.
Most were used during the period 13th-24th January, although they remained valid for postage until 31st January.
During the evening of January 23, the ship ''Botnia'' sailed into Torshavn harbour with 1000 sheets of the 7ore stamps which were placed on sale the following day. The 7ore postal rate continued until 1st October when it was raised to 10 ore.
