Norway : Stamps from 1901-1949

In 1905 Norway became a sovereign kingdom under the new monarch, Haakon VII, and a new definitive set appeared. In 1925 stamps were issued to help fund Roald Amundsen’s attempted flight to the North Pole. The attractive design shows a polar bear standing on an ice-flow and gazing up at a passing airplane. Other Norwegian notables were honored on stamps during this period including Henrik Ibsen, dramatist. During WWII Norway was occupied and the government-in-exile issued a series of 8 patriotic stamps for the use of the Royal Norwegian Navy and the merchant marine.
